How ‘ heredity ’ and ‘ environment ’ shape galaxy properties
In this review, I give a brief summary of galaxy evolution processes in hierarchical cosmologies and of their relative importance at different masses, times, and environments. I remind the reader of the processes that are commonly included in modern semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, and I comment on recent results and open issues.
متن کاملHeredity, environment, and the question how?
Two or three decades ago, the socalled heredity-environment question was the center of lively controversy. Today, on the other hand, many psychologists look upon it as a dead issue. It is now generally conceded that both hereditary and environmental factors enter into all behavior. The reacting organism is a product of its genes and its past environment, while present environment provides the i...
متن کاملCardiomyopathy in Africa: heredity versus environment
Unlike other parts of the world in which cardiomyopathy is rare, heart muscle disease is endemic in Africa. The major forms of cardiomyopathy in Africa are dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF). Whereas DCM is a major cause of heart failure throughout the continent, EMF is restricted to the tropical regions of East, Central, and West Africa. Although epidemiological stu...
متن کاملHeredity, Environment, and Cranial Form: A Reanalysis of Boas'
Franz Boas's classic study, Changes in bodily form of descendants of immigrants, is a landmark in the history of anthropology. More than any single study, it undermined racial typology in physical anthropology and helped turn the tide against early-20th century scientific racism. In 1928, Boas responded to critics of the immigrant study by publishing the raw data set as Materials for the Study ...
متن کاملRho kinase polymorphism influences blood pressure and systemic vascular resistance in human twins: role of heredity.
The Rho/Rho kinase (ROCK) pathway is implicated in experimental hypertension. We, therefore, explored the role of ROCK2 genetic variation in human blood pressure (BP) regulation, exploiting the advantages of a human twin sample to probe heritability. The focus of this work is the common nonsynonymous variant at ROCK2: Thr431Asn. Cardiovascular and autonomic traits displayed substantial heritabi...
